Shaping an Inclusive Future: Roma Youth from Ukraine at the Council of Europe Session in Strasbourg

Active young leaders, graduates of our educational programs, and members of the “Roma Youth Development Platform” took part in the international study session “Remembering, Resisting and Rebuilding: Together Against Anti-Gypsyism for Inclusive Societies.” The event was held from October 7 to 11 at the prestigious European Youth Centre in Strasbourg, France, gathering young people from all over Europe.

Memory, Resistance, and Rebuilding: Key Themes of the Dialogue

The session’s program was intensive and dynamic, combining theoretical knowledge with practical work. It began with a welcoming evening that set a tone of constructive cooperation and open dialogue for the entire week.

Key elements of the training included:

  • Exploring History: Participants delved deep into the rich history and culture of the Roma, analyzing both their heritage and the systemic challenges Roma communities have faced over centuries.
  • Interactive Formats: Through group discussions, reflection groups, and storytelling evenings, activists shared personal experiences and ideas, fostering mutual support and a sense of unity.

A Voice of Memory: The Meeting with Christian Pfeil

One of the most emotional and significant moments of the session was the meeting with Christian Pfeil, a survivor of the Roma genocide. His story served as a powerful reminder of why memory is an integral part of the fight for justice and an inclusive society today. This dialogue underscored the responsibility of the current generation to prevent the tragedies of the past from recurring.

Our Contribution: Active Participation of the Platform’s Graduates

It was extremely important for our organization that the delegates from Ukraine were graduates of our educational programs. This is a testament to the success of our work in shaping a new generation of Roma leaders who are ready to represent the interests of their community on the international stage.

Participation in this session is not just about remembering the past. It is about active engagement in the present and responsibly building a future free from prejudice, discrimination, and anti-gypsyism. The knowledge and new partnerships gained will undoubtedly strengthen our activities in Ukraine.
