April 2-4, 2013. Tetyana Storozhko participated in the research seminar “Roma in Post-Soviet Countries: History, Ethnography, Politics” held at the Central Scientific Library “Andrei Lupan” of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova in Chisinau. The seminar was organized to discuss various aspects of research and policies regarding the Roma community.
The seminar included lectures on the following main topics: the origins of Roma and their emergence in Europe, the history of Roma in different empires and states, research on the Roma genocide during World War II, state policies regarding Roma, the national Roma movement in the post-Soviet period, Roma migrations, the international Roma movement, the ethno-social structure of Roma, ethnocultural traditions of Roma in Eastern Europe, current issues in social policies concerning Roma, and the state of research on Roma culture.
The seminar’s lecturers included Elena Marushiakova, Veselin Popov, Mykhailo Tyahly, and Ion Dumitru. The participants had the opportunity to discuss and exchange knowledge and ideas related to the research on Roma culture and policies concerning this marginalized population group.
The seminar concluded with a general discussion and summary, allowing the participants to draw conclusions from the topics discussed. This research seminar contributed to the expansion of knowledge and understanding of Roma culture, history, and politics in post-Soviet countries, as well as facilitating networking among activists, scholars, and researchers.
