Part Six. Our Days
Krakow, July 2019
Ivan Korniyovych barely finished his story. It wasn’t easy for anyone, but in the last hour, everyone listened to the veteran with bated breath. After a short pause, he continued to speak.
— We must preserve and remember history so that war does not repeat itself. It was a terrible grief for each of us. God forbid that no one goes through this in the present. In the future, I wish you great friendship among yourselves. We must all be equal, friendly, and take care of each other, — Ivan Korniyovych concluded the evening with advice for the youth, after which the audience burst into applause.
Krakow, July 2023
A full-scale war began in Ukraine in 2022. In the place of Ivan Korniyovych, now sits Roma youth, recalling: «A few years ago, we listened carelessly to the stories of «our grandfather», Ivan Bilashchenko, and couldn’t imagine that soon we would become survivors ourselves and tell about the horrors of a new, big war».
They endured the horrors of occupation, survived the shelling, and managed to reveal to the whole world how in the 21st century russia is destroying Ukrainian cities and killing civilians. They are here to show how Ukrainians of all ethnic backgrounds have united in the fight against evil.
