Romani Theme at the “ART-Playback. Together” Festival

The fifth International Inclusive Theater Festival “ART-Playback. Together” took place in Kyiv on June 7-9, 2019. The ART-Playback Festival has been gathering representatives of communities, activists, and artists for several years now. It provides an opportunity to collectively seek answers to important questions that concern society. Discrimination, stereotypes, social inequality – surprisingly, these phenomena still persist in the 21st century. Unfortunately. And fortunately, there are methods that can rectify the situation. They say that beauty will save the world. And what is beauty if not art?

That is why our colleague, Tetiana Storozhko, joined the artistic community and conducted an interactive session aimed at dismantling stereotypical perceptions of the Romani community. The festival opened with Romani poetry performed by Romani poet Raïsa Nabaranchuk. A discussion was also held, focusing on Romani youth activism and the challenges faced by the community.

One of the main themes of the discussion revolved around the question:

  • The intergenerational connection – obstacle or path to community development?
  • And what role does Romani youth play in these processes?

Together, we contemplated, spoke, and engaged in discussions.
