Strengthening the Roma Movement: TENET at OSCE/ODIHR Events in Warsaw

The team of NGO “TENET” participated in a series of key human rights events in Warsaw, organized by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). Our involvement focused on strengthening the capacity of Ukrainian Roma activists, particularly in digital security, and advocating for the rights of the Roma community at the international level.

Digital Security Training: Protecting Activism in the Online Space

In the digital age, online activism is a powerful tool for advancing human rights. However, it also brings new risks, such as cyberbullying, disinformation, and surveillance. Understanding these challenges, the OSCE/ODIHR organized a specialized training for 15 Ukrainian Roma activists and human rights defenders.

Our team joined this intensive training, where we:

  • Learned methods for identifying digital threats.
  • Mastered practical tools for protecting personal data and organizational information.
  • Developed strategies for secure communication and conducting online campaigns.

This knowledge is critically important for creating a safe digital space where the voice of the Roma community can be heard loudly and without fear.

High-Level Dialogue: Participation in Key Conferences

In addition to the training, the TENET team was honored to be invited to two important conferences that served as platforms for strategic discussions and building international partnerships.

  1. “Needs, Opportunities, and Potential of Roma and Sinti Women’s Organizations and Activists in the OSCE Region.” This conference focused on ways to enhance the role of Roma women in public and political life, as well as mechanisms to support women’s initiatives.
  2. “Addressing Human Rights Challenges of Roma in Ukraine through Dialogue between Authorities, Civil Society, and the International Community.” This event was dedicated to the current challenges faced by Roma in Ukraine and the search for collaborative solutions to overcome them.

Why Is This Important?

Participating in such events not only allows us to acquire new skills but also to integrate the Ukrainian Roma movement into a global human rights context. Exchanging experiences with international partners and OSCE representatives opens up new opportunities for advocacy and project implementation.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the OSCE/ODIHR for the organization, the opportunity for learning, and the productive dialogue. The knowledge gained and the new connections will undoubtedly strengthen our work aimed at protecting and promoting the rights of Roma in Ukraine. Together, we are creating a safer future!
